As Investigators Close In On Donald Trump, Some Wonder What Would Happen To His Secret Service Protection If He Ended Up In Prison

We haven't had to worry about this before.

The New York Attorney General’s investigation into the Trump Organization “is no longer purely civil in nature,” and the probe has elevated to a criminal case. Making matters worse for Trump,  prosecutors are reportedly treating the investigation into the Trump Organization in much the same manner that they would if they were investigating and prosecuting a Mafia family. Like other former presidents, Trump has Secret Service protection, but what happens if he ends up in prison?

“This would be unprecedented,” said Jeffrey Robinson, co-author of the book “Standing Next to History: An Agent’s Life Inside the Secret Service,” according to HuffPost. “It’s going to present some very interesting circumstances,” he added.

President Biden could get the final say in this.

“There is no precedent for this, so no one knows for certain the answer, and arguably President Biden gets final say over the extent of any USSS protection for his predecessor,” Bradley Moss, a lawyer with national security expertise, told the outlet. “That said, it is likely former President Trump would maintain protection even if convicted and incarcerated due to his special status.”

However, I don’t really see President Biden leaving Trump without protection because he’s not a petty man that holds grudges as his predecessor does.

Robinson, though, disagreed.  “You’re not going to put Secret Service agents in prison to protect a guy who’s already being protected by the prison,” he said.

“Weighing in his favor, according to legal experts, is his advanced age and lack of criminal convictions,” HuffPost reports. “Weighing against him is his access to money ― possibly including the $76 million he raised under false pretenses from his supporters between the election and the Jan. 6 insurrection ― and his ownership of a jet, making him a flight risk.”

It’s an interesting topic, and one we haven’t had to be concerned about in the past. However, Trump was a one-of-a-kind president, so here we are. Trump will likely regret ever running for the presidency. Once he walked into the White House, he was the most scrutinized man in the world, just like any other sitting president. But with Trump, he had a lot to hide. Like his taxes, for example. Do you know who doesn’t have to worry about being locked up? Hillary Clinton, that’s who.
