Trump should really hear this.

Cindy McCain has kept a low profile since the death of her husband Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), but earlier today she broke her silence to send the president a much-needed message.

In her first interview since her husband passed, McCain gave an interview with “CBS This Morning” to teach Donald Trump a lesson he desperately needs. Calling the president a “negative Nancy,” McCain stated that she hopes Trump has learned something since his disastrous presidency caused several Republican losses in the midterm elections. McCain said:

I think he’s questioning himself right now as to where he goes, what he’s doing. I think maybe the things that have occurred, especially with this election, may maybe take him back to basics. I’m hoping it does. It’s very humbling to lose, and I hope he learns from it and realizes that our country needs a strong leader, not a negative Nancy, if I can put it in such a basic term.”

This is a powerful message from the wife of an American war hero who was regularly attacked by the president, particularly for his military service — even as the two-time presidential contender was suffering from brain cancer.

McCain was also asked for her “personal feeling about the president,” and she didn’t hold back. She admitted that the president’s insults have been hard to process. She said:

He is now the president of the United States. I respect the office and respect the, you know, what this means to the country. You know, our families have had their differences, and I’ll leave it at that.

It has been, at times, hard for me to listen to him about my husband, I’ll be honest.”
