Republican Rep. Liz Cheney on Wednesday in her opening testimony at the House Rules Committee called on House Republicans to “step back from the brink” while criticizing House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy for seeking to obstruct the select committee that’s investigating the deadly January 6 insurrection.

The Wyoming Republican also blasted former President Donald Trump’s ally Steve Bannon after he refused to cooperate with the House committee, saying that his claim of executive privilege is not only invalid, but suggests Trump was “personally involved” in the execution of the events that day. Cheney, vice chair of the Jan. 6 panel, went on to urge her Republican colleagues to hold Bannon in contempt.

“I urge you to do what you know is right, to think of the long arc of history. We are told that it bends towards justice. But it does so only because of the actions of men and women in positions of public trust,” Cheney said.

Well, it appears that the twice-impeached one-term president was watching the hearing because he lashed out at Cheney in a statement tweeted out by his spokesperson Liz Cheney since Trump has been banned on the behemoth social site.

Trump claimed that “people absolutely cannot stand” Cheney, and said, “To look at her is to despise her. Hopefully she will continue down this unsustainable path and she will soon be gone!”

Aside from Trump’s juvenile statement, you would think that he wouldn’t lash out at members of a committee that is investigating the attack at the Capitol that the former president incited.
