CPAC Chair Appears To Threaten Mitt Romney’s “Physical Safety” If He Attends Conference

But tell us how you really feel, Matt.

One of President Donald Trump’s cronies appeared to incite violence against Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Sunday by warning him not to attend CPAC out of concern for his “physical safety.”

Romney was the only Republican senator to vote to convict Trump during the impeachment trial, citing his faith as a major reason for his decision.

Ever since, Trump and his rabid supporters have been viciously attacking him, including CPAC chairman Matt Schlapp, who posting on Twitter that Romney is not invited to the annual conference.

That’s not a big deal really. It’s not like Romney is missing out on anything by not getting to go. But if he does go, Schlapp has a warning that he delivered during an interview with Greta Van Susteren.

“We won’t credential him as a conservative,” Schlapp said. “I suppose if he wants to come as a nonconservative and debate an issue with us, maybe in the future we would have him come. This year, I would actually be afraid for his physical safety because people hate him so much.”

This sounds like a veiled threat against Romney if he shows up at CPAC, setting the stage for an explosive confrontation should the Utah senator decide to attend.

Trump supporters are easily incited so Romney is definitely in danger now. Schlapp pretty much made it clear that Romney is not welcome at CPAC. He didn’t have to make a veiled threat.

However, banning Romney only hurts CPAC. The conservative base is shrinking and Schlapp is doing CPAC no favors by alienating those who hurt Trump’s feelings. Romney did the right thing by voting to convict. If other Senate Republicans had had the same courage, our long national nightmare would finally be over.

Instead, it drags on.
