Ever since news broke of Donald Trump’s shady attempt at extortion against the Ukranian government and the subsequent news of a formal impeachment inquiry against him by House Democrats, the GOP party has been desperately scrambling to figure out a way to bust Trump out of the hot water of his own making.
However, the fact of the matter is, Trump did exactly what he’s being accused of. In fact, the transcript of the “perfect” Ukraine call, released by Trump himself in a last-ditch attempt to somehow clear his name, still did him more harm than good, even in its doctored state.
No matter which way you slice it, the president of the United States attempted to use his position as the president of the United States to extort a foreign government into giving him dirt on his political rival, to strengthen his own chances for the impending election, by withholding funding from the country that was owed to them.
It’s bribery. Plain and simple.

None of those facts, however, are doing anything to stanch the influx of corrupt GOP members firing off their hair-brained defenses for Trump as they desperately try to shut this whole thing down on little more than a technicality.
But beloved veteran journalist Dan Rather is doing his duty in ensuring that the American public knows what’s truly going on — the GOP is attempting to use shady tactics to desensitize the American public to the gravity of Trump’s transgressions.
“What jumped out to me today is the effort by the Republicans to sort of say, ‘listen, everybody knows all of this,’” Rather stated during a sit down with MSNBC’s Ari Melber.
“They seek to have people become numb to what we already know,” the former CBS news anchor continued. “That’s what jumped out to me today because we already know that the evidence we’re talking about now, the solicitation of a foreign power to get involved in our election, the evidence is strong. The president’s behavior in what he said has been outrageous.”
Rather went on to describe “the complicity of the Republicans” during a “serious moment for the country” as “depressing” and then began to outline the difference between Donald’s impeachment and that of Clinton or Nixon, both of which he also reported on.
“First and foremost, this is the first time in which we’ve had an impeachment proceeding in which it involved questions of a foreign power involved in elections or sought to be involved in elections, and very serious military national security issues,” he stated. “That didn’t exist with the Clinton impeachment. It didn’t exist with the impeachment effort against Richard Nixon, who resigned, rather than face them.”
He added, “But in a broader and much more important way, this is fundamentally about our history of the country and the destiny of our country because history is watching and listening and it’s going to be a very tough chronicler of these events and the people involved in the events of today.”
The GOP has essentially taken to trying to convince the American public that Trump did it, but it’s just not that big a deal. Don’t let them fool you.
