Democratic Votes Are Seeping Into Nunes’ Once GOP Strong California District, Threatening The Rep’s Chances At Reelection

Aww. That's too bad, Devin.

Typically speaking, the state of California is as blue as a clear summer sky when it comes to their political affiliation. Honestly, you can ask just about anyone, Republicans and Democrats alike, what they feel is the most liberal state in the US and chances are good that they’ll answer with “Cali.”

Hell, back in 2016, Trump didn’t just lose California. He lost California BAD.

However, the central valley of California has always been a pocket of safety for GOPers in the state. Recently, the Los Angeles Times did some digging in the valley to see how the support in the mostly-red district manned by California native, Rep. Devin Nunes, was stacking up.

The LA Times kicked off their report by stating that Nunes was still coming out on top for now, despite many of the constituents promising their vote to a Democratic presidential candidate.

“The GOP enjoys an advantage with 39 percent of registered voters here, compared with the Democrats’ 32 percent,” the publication wrote. “While Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump by more than 4.2 million votes statewide, the future president found a rare haven in the 22nd, where he ran up a 10-percentage-point victory.”

The Times went on to explain that this is a good reason for Nunes’ eagerness to snuggle up to Trump upon his win three years ago. However, thanks to the backlash that has come in waves against Trump and his “people” since the 2016 election, it appears as though that safety pocket that Nunes has enjoyed may soon become a thing of the past.

Not only were two Congressional seats in San Joaquin Valley, eerily close to Devin’s own district, previously held by GOP members who lost to their Democratic challengers — the once secure support for Nunes specifically has started to waver, “making clear the region could no longer be considered a Republican lock,” according to the LA Times.

“Nunes won. But his victory, by a little more than 5 percentage points, was a shadow of the 30- and 40-point blowouts that had been the norm,” the report goes on to explain.

“The shift to the left has been particularly distinct in Fresno County,” the Times stated. “After decades of Republican dominion, the county voted for Barack Obama in two straight presidential races, then sided with Hillary Clinton over Trump in 2016. In January, two newly elected Latino members of the Fresno City Council solidified Democratic control.”

Nunes former challenger, Andrew Janz, weighed in, stating, “I think Fresno is kind of a microcosm of what’s happening throughout the rest of the Central Valley. We’re seeing it trend more blue.”

It’s becoming increasingly clear that not only is Donald Trump’s clock ticking, but so are those of the individuals who have pledged their loyalty to one man over that of the nation they took an oath to honor.

We weren’t kidding when we said we were coming with a blue wave.
