In the wake of President Donald Trump’s hospitalization at Walter Reed Military Medical Center as a result of his coronavirus infection, the country is naturally looking for some answers. In an effort to get some, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow held a segment this morning where she interviewed medical expert Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, who served as a healthcare adviser under the Obama administration.

The interview with the doctor didn’t begin until 18 minutes into the show. During Maddow’s intro, she seemed to be downplaying the risk of Donald Trump actually succumbing to COVID-19. As is customary of the MSNBC host, Maddow took the first few moments of her interview to ask her guest if anything from her intro needs to be corrected in any way. And what Dr. Emmanuel had to say was truly rather startling.

Maddow opened the interview by stating, “Correct me if anything I laid out there is wrong or I am putting the wrong emphasis in terms of people understanding the severity of what we are up against here.”

“I would say two things,” the doctor responded before explaining, “First of all, to have the most powerful man in the world, the leader of the free world, our president, with somewhere between a 5% and 11% [or] 12% of dying, I don’t think that’s so trivial — that’s pretty substantial risk of dying in the next few weeks.”

Dr. Emmanuel went on to strongly advise, “And that, I think, is a national security threat. It is something to take every, very seriously.”

It’s true that Donald Trump is the President of the United States, so there’s certainly no denying that he will receive the very best care possible, to the fullest extent, throughout the course of his illness. However, folks, bigger and better than Donald Trump have lost their lives to this deadly virus. It’s our responsibility to be prepared for every possible outcome.
