Washington Post National Arts reporter Geoff Edgers interviewed Dr. Anthony Fauci on Friday during an Instagram live series, and the two touched on noted virologist Tucker Carlson’s constant criticism of our nation’s top infectious disease expert that is trying to guide us through the coronavirus pandemic. Carlson, of course, does not have a degree in science, but he tries to play the role of someone who does on television. Fauci told Edgers that Carlson “triggers some of the crazies in society.”
“I flip around the channels at night, which I probably shouldn’t. And I found this guy — you know this guy, Tucker Carlson? You heard of him?” Edgers asked Fauci.
“He’s the guy that really loves me, right?” Fauci replied.
Edgers then read some of Carlson’s recent over the top statements about him.

‘Lord Fauci,’ he called you. ‘Has America put too much faith in just one man?’ ‘Unelected Fauci has been leading this country.’ ‘Fauci has made a lot of wrong predictions.’
“Does that get under your skin?” Edgers asked Fauci. “Does it bother you? On a humane level, do you feel threatened or concerned when you see that kind of thing floating out there?”
“I’m not concerned about what he says,” Fauci replied. “It’s a little bit — I think you could say that when he does that, it triggers some of the crazies in society to start threatening me, actually threatening, which actually happens.”

Indeed, Fauci has said that he and his family have required continued security after receiving harassment and death threats from individuals.
“The unseemingly things that crises bring out in the world, it brings out the best of people and the worst of people, and getting death threats to my family and harassing my daughters to the point where I have to get security — it’s amazing,” Fauci said in an interview with CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta on Harvard’s School of Public Health website that was streamed on Facebook Live last week.
Well, perhaps — and just stay with me here — if the Trump administration and its friendly-media figures like Tucker Carlson would stop attacking and smearing our country’s top expert on diseases who is trying to guide us safely through the pandemic, then the death threats would have never happened. Crazy idea, huh?
