One of the most powerful Republicans in Ohio has been arrested by the FBI and charged by federal prosecutors in connection with a major bribery scheme.

As Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, Rep. Larry Householder has repeatedly pushed a religious right-wing agenda that includes anti-abortion and anti-LGBT measures. He’s also a supporter of Donald Trump, having once “aired a TV ad that showed him loading a rifle and shooting a television that represented ‘anti-Trump gun-grabbers’ whom he said were out to get him,” according to Columbus Monthly.

Householder has also bragged about his high NRA rating and his status as a conservative Christian.

But now he’s going to jail after the FBI descended upon his home to bust him for committing bribery to the tune of $60 million.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports:

Federal officials arrested Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder and four others on Tuesday morning in connection with a $60 million bribery case.

U.S. Attorney David DeVillers’ office would not discuss details of the case, but a source involved in the investigation confirmed Householder’s arrest to The Enquirer.

A spokeswoman for DeVillers said an Ohio official and associates were charged in the case, which she described as a ‘public corruption racketeering conspiracy involving $60 million.'”

It’s a huge bust for the FBI and a big loss for the Republican Party ahead of an election in November that could see Democrats pick up seats in the state legislature, where they are currently the minority party.

Of course, Republicans could ask Trump to intervene so that Householder can get away with his crimes. After all, Trump has no problem letting criminals go free as long as they are Republicans who support him or are part of his inner circle.

Still, the arrest alone will damage the Republican Party, which Trump has often proclaimed to be the party of “law and order.” The problem is that Trump and Republicans are all too often on the opposite side of that coin.
