In the ongoing saga of the now-deceased Jeffrey Epstein and his recently-arrested longtime cohort Ghislaine Maxwell, a federal judge ruled today that five previously sealed documents in the case must be unsealed and made public no later than Thursday — a two-day timetable for Maxwell’s defense, which had raised opposition to the release of the pages.
District Judge Loretta Preska was unmoved by arguments by Maxwell and her lawyers that the documents remain under seal, weighing the privacy of the accused against the public’s right to transparency, and finding in favor of said transparency.
Some of the materials now scheduled for release include Maxwell’s private 2016 deposition, her mail and email correspondence with the convicted pedophile, and even a deposition from Trump ally Alan Dershowitz, whose involvement in the ordeal has been widely mocked over his ridiculous public protestations that have only served to make him look more guilty, more like he was deeply involved.
Rebuking the Maxwell team’s arguments, Judge Preska made herself plain:
In the context of this case, especially its allegations of sex trafficking of young girls, the court finds that any minor embarrassment or annoyance resulting from disclosure of Ms. Maxwell’s mostly non-testimony about behavior that has been widely reported in the press is far outweighed by the presumption of public access.”

In other words, this is a serious case, and Maxwell’s involvement is already widely-known — certainly whatever reputation Ghislaine Maxwell has left can’t suffer any more deeply than it already has through the release of documents that are rightly considered to be evidence that the public should have access to.

It apparently turns out that being the right-hand woman in a global sex-trafficking scheme involving as many high-profile names as can be imagined doesn’t earn you any defensive capital with judges here in America.
