Florida Governor Refuses To Answer Reporter’s Question About John Lewis’ Death: “I Appreciate The Question, But We’re Trying To Focus On The Coronavirus”

Why am I not surprised?

Trump and his band of GOP cronies have seemingly made a point to be as flippant and uncaring about the heart-wrenching loss of civil rights activist Democratic Congressman, John Lewis, as possible.

The news broke of Lewis’ passing late last night, and unsurprisingly so, while dozens of prominent figures expressed their heartfelt grief and sadness at the loss of such a powerful icon in the civil rights movement, Donald Trump himself didn’t have a word to say about the matter until this afternoon — and even then it was clearly nothing more than obligatory crap.

And it seems that his Republican jockeys are quick to follow Trump’s lead.

This morning, Florida Republican and Trump-loving Governor Ron DeSantis held a press conference regarding the coronavirus pandemic that’s still rampant in the United States and currently hammering down extra hard on the state of Florida after DeSantis served as one of the first local leaders to jump on Donald’s rapid reopening plan against the advice of the CDC and WHO.

Naturally, in the wake of Lewis’ passing, one reporter present at the press conference questioned the Governor regarding the loss of such a powerful figure.

However, according to the Tampa Bay Times, DeSantis didn’t want to talk about John Lewis.

“We saw last night Congressman John Lewis passed away. He’s a civil rights icon. You know, this is happening amidst heated conversation in this country about race, monuments, flags,” an unidentified reporter questioned the governor before moving into the topic of the recent vote to remove a Confederate memorial.

DeSantis quickly cut the reporter off, saying, “All right, yeah. I appreciate the question, but we’re trying to focus on the coronavirus. I appreciate it, but I’m going to let someone ask about—do you have a question about the topic at hand?” as he cut off to a different reporter at the presser.

DeSantis’ actions at this presser alone pretty much prove that he shares Donald Trump’s blatant racism and disregard for the loss of such an important life.

At this point, it’s indescribable how important it is to get ourselves into some “good trouble” when November finally rolls around.
