Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Issues Subpoena For Pompeo After He Reportedly Used State Department Money To Smear Joe Biden

This is huge.

Rep. Eliot Engel, the Chair on the House Foreign Relations Committee, has issued a subpoena for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to deliver thousands of pages of records regarding investigations into Joe and Hunter Biden and Hunter’s dealings with Burisma holdings — pages which Pompeo has already delivered to Republicans on various Senate committees.

At issue is the fact that Pompeo has refused repeatedly to hand over copies of the documents to Democrats, demonstrating a willingness to assist Republicans in promoting the baseless theories surrounding Hunter Biden’s time on the board of Burisma, a topic that has been thoroughly debunked for any evidence of wrongdoing.

Engel has accused the State Department of essentially campaigning for the president by giving information to Republicans and not to Democrats, and by blocking the testimony of key witnesses in the probe that may help to expose the Republican effort to smear Biden with the unfounded accusations.

In a statement upon issuing the subpoena, Engel was concise:

Secretary Pompeo has turned the State Department into an arm of the Trump campaign and he’s not even trying to disguise it. After trying to stonewall virtually every oversight effort by the Foreign Affairs Committee in the last two years, Mr. Pompeo is more than happy to help Senate Republicans advance their conspiracy theories about the Bidens. I want to see the full record of what the department has sent to the Senate and I want the American people to see it too.”

The press release from the Foreign Affairs Committee goes on to detail the fact that Pompeo was just as obstructionist during the impeachment trial of Donald Trump, and that immediately following Trump’s acquittal by 53 Republicans, Pompeo ignored a subpoena for related records and immediately began delivering the information sought by Democrats to Republican committees only.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee is the oversight authority for the State Department, and yet the 16,000-plus pages that Pompeo has made available to Republicans is still out of the Democrats’ reach. Engel has given Pompeo one week to comply with the order.
