After downplaying the deadly January 6 insurrection for nearly a year, we’ve now learned that Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity, and Brian Kilmeade texted Donald Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows on that violent day to plead with him to get the former President to stop the riots. And it wasn’t just the Fox News personalities, but there were Republicans involved, and Donald Trump Jr, the former President’s eldest son, also begged Meadows to get his father to “lead” to stop the riots. To be clear, they all knew that what was happening was very dangerous, but they downplayed it anyway.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked about the text messages that were revealed by the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riots, and she tore into the Fox News hosts.

“It’s disappointing, and unfortunately not surprising, that some of the very same individuals who were willing to mourn, condemn, and express horror over what happened on January 6 in private, were totally silent in public,” Psaki told the reporter. “Or, even worse, were spreading lies and conspiracy theories, and have continued to since that time.”

Watch:

Rep. Liz Cheney, the Wyoming Republican and Vice-Chair of the House Select Committee, read the texts sent to Trump’s former chief of staff. “He’s got to condemn this sh*t ASAP,” Don Jr. texted Meadows. “The Capitol Police tweet is not enough.”

Fox News host Brian Kilmeade texted Meadows, pleading, “Please get him on TV,” adding that the insurrection was “destroying everything you have accomplished.” Each text contained panicked messages as the Capitol was under attack by a mob of Trump supporters. For nearly a year now, they’ve all known that the twice-impeached one-term President incited the riots, but they denied it. After all, they sent the messages to the very man that had the power to stop it all: Donald J. Trump.
