Republicans have been retaliating against Rep. Liz Cheney (R-W) for the Wyoming Republican’s criticism of former President Donald Trump following the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol that he incited. Republican lawmakers in mid-May chose Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York as the No. 3 GOPer in the House, anointing a Trump loyalist to a leadership position charged with delivering party messaging to replace Cheney. As if that wasn’t enough, the Wyoming Republican Party voted on Saturday to no longer recognize Cheney as a member of the GOP. However, Stefanik voted less with Trump during his four-year term than Cheney did.
To say that Cheney isn’t acknowledged as a Republican anymore is ridiculous. Cheney is very conservative. She does, though, believe in following the Constitution, and she does not kiss Trump’s ass as he continues to try to overturn a legitimate election. House minority Kevin McCarthy was confronted with Cheney’s ostracization by her own party by a reporter, and let’s just say that it didn’t go down well.
“Why is it that the only thing Republicans will punish one of their own members for in this congress is speaking out against Donald Trump?” a reporter asked, apparently referring to Rep. Paul Gosar being censored with only two Republicans supporting it, including Cheney.
McCarthy refused to admit that Cheney has been punished by members of her party and said, “She didn’t get punished for that. She lost an election!” McCarthy is referring to Cheney losing her influential role as number 3 Republican in the House. “I’m sorry, people run for election all the time. No basis there.”

Well, he’s lying, of course. In response to the Wyoming Republican Party’s decision to not acknowledge her as a Republican, Jeremy Adler, a Cheney spokesperson, called it laughable.
“It’s laughable to suggest Liz is anything but a committed conservative Republican. She is bound by her oath to the Constitution. Sadly, a portion of the Wyoming GOP leadership has abandoned that fundamental principle and instead allowed themselves to be held hostage to the lies of a dangerous and irrational man,” Adler said.
McCarthy is being dishonest. The reporter knows it. Cheney knows it, and McCarthy knows it, too.
