Matt Gaetz Went On Fox News And Praised Trump For Being “The First President To End One Of These Forever Wars And Not Start One”

Up is down.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has now killed more Americans than the Vietnam War, Gulf War, Afghanistan War, and Iraq War combined. If the president had acted promptly when he first learned of the looming threat, tens of thousands of lives could have been saved. Trump now labels himself as a “wartime president” after his appallingly slow response in the battle against the pandemic.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) might want to take back his words now after he previously offered a bizarre defense for Donald Trump extrajudicially having a missile fired to take out Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani: “The president would need Congressional authorization to start a war with Iran,” the Florida Republican told a Fox News host, and he added, “as the president made very clear, this was an effort to protect our troops and to stop a war, not to start one.”

Yeah, sure, buddy, you go with that. The conversation out here, in reality, is that taking out a country’s second most powerful person (that’s akin to a foreign power assassinating vice-president Mike Pence) is going to start a war.

Gaetz, a staunch Trump defender, went on to claim that this was a change in doctrine from former presidents George Bush and Barack Obama, who he alleged would invade, then try to be seen as “liberators.” That claim, by the way, is in direct contrast to what Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said. Pompeo said on CNN, “I saw last night there was dancing in the streets in parts of Iraq. We have every expectation that people not only in Iraq but in Iran, will view the American action last night as giving them freedom.”

Rep. Drunky McDrunkerson went on to say that Trump is “the first president to end one of these forever wars and not start one.”

Watch:

Trump has also claimed that he’s the “only person who can fight for the safety of our troops & bring them home from the ridiculous & costly Endless Wars” even though there are now more troops in the Middle East since the current occupant of the White House took office, and 3,500 more troops are now being deployed to the region. As conservatives like to say, facts don’t care about your feelings. In this case, Gaetz, Pompeo, and Trump are devoid of actual facts while trying to defend this “president” whose careless actions were likely used as a distraction from his impeachment. Trump is just wagging the dog.

Trump repeatedly claimed that Obama would start a war with Iran to get reelected, and again, the opposite seems to be true. Soleimani was a really shitty person and there’s no doubt about that. But would Republicans have been OK with a foreign power assassinating George W. Bush and Dick Cheney after they had our military invade a sovereign country that resulted in the death of tens of thousands of people, including civilians? Especially if the war was all based on a lie? Would that have been OK, Rep. Gaetz? The U. S. is not innocent either. And if that had happened, the foreign power could have claimed that they were stopping an endless war.

We’re close to hitting the one hundred thousand mark for the lives lost in the U.S. from the COVID-19 pandemic.
