Melania Trump isn’t a well-liked person in the States. While we’re sure that the woman suffers pretty greatly at the hands of what we can only imagine is a very abusive husband, it’s hard to feel much sympathy for her when she’s constantly spewing her husband’s birtherism nonsense and wearing “I don’t really care, do you?” jackets to visit the concentration camps that Donald continues to cage migrant children inside.
But as it turns out Melania’s hometown in Slovenia doesn’t seem to have much love for her either, after her sanctimonious approach to immigration, considering she’s an immigrant herself — and quite frankly, suspicions have swirled as to whether she’s even a legal one.
According to a report from CNN, Melania’s Slovenian hometown of Sevnica has a bit of a love-hate relationship with America’s first lady. While the small town has certainly taken advantage of the opportunity to profit off their famous former resident — selling Melania-themed honey, cake, and chocolates — the recent creation of a tree stump statue bearing the first lady’s likeness has shed some light on the true, deepest feelings of some of her home town’s citizens.
The life-size wood statue was commissioned by US artist Brad Downey from local chainsaw sculptor Ales Zupevc, who’s best known as “Maxi” — an artist who was coincidentally born in the same year and hospital as the first lady, but whose life turned out strikingly different.

The sculpture’s creation is merely one part of a multi-part documentary film Brad Downey is creating — in which he followed Maxi around Melania’s hometown interviewing locals, shedding light on the first lady’s roots as well as the stark differences in the life she currently lives and that of the individuals still residing in the alpine country.
“I don’t know her personally, but she’s my age,” Maxi says in the documentary. “We were both born in April. All the more reason to make the statue. Being born the same year, the same month. She might come and see the thing. She might like it.”
Maxi noticeably can’t ignore the striking differences in his and Melania’s life now, considering they both hail from such humble beginnings. “Let’s face it, she owns half of America while I have nothing,” he stated matter-of-factly.
“By focusing on one working-class man’s portrayal of a public and internationally known personality, the film offers insights on local and global problems and policies illuminated by the USA and Europe and beyond,” Nadia Pilchowski, a gallery curator stated.
“If the monument was meant to be a parody, then the artist has been successful,” one person told Agence France-Presse. “We in Sevnica can only laugh and, at the same time, hold our heads in our hands over their (the Trumps’) catastrophic reputation.”
It seems that her hometown is just as baffled as we are that a sitting president can be so hateful and harsh towards immigration when he is quite literally married to an immigrant himself.
