Amanda Gorman, who delivered the inaugural poem at Joe Biden’s swearing-in as President of the United States, as the youngest poet in history to ever hold the honor, recently appeared on the Ellen Degeneres Show and opened up about how it all feels as she still rides the waves of one of the most important inauguration’s this country has ever seen — and also gave us a little snippet of info on the conversation she happened to overhear from the Obama’s, and we’re living for it!
Gorman, who’s from Los Angeles and attended President Biden’s inauguration with her mother, Joan Wicks, said she and her mom found themselves pretty star-struck, sitting in such close proximity to notable names such as Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, and Michelle and Barack Obama.
During her appearance on the Ellen show, Gorman admitted that she happened to overhear a rather comical, albeit somewhat feisty conversation between the former President and First Lady that we just can’t get enough of. According to Gorman, Michelle Obama was continually reminding her husband to adhere to proper social distancing guidelines during the exciting event.
“[Michelle] kept yelling at Barack, ‘Stop hugging people! Stop getting close to people,’” Gorman recalled on the show. “And then when I was done, she kind of pushed him out of the way and gave me just the biggest, warmest Michelle Obama hug.”

The poet went on to explain that she was informed about the decision to have her as the inaugural poet on December 30th, but that she still wished she’d had more time to practice her poem, The Hill We Climb, before the big day.
“I understood, in some capacity, that I was making history as the youngest inaugural poet,” she said. “I didn’t know really what that history would look like or the impact that it would have.”
Later on in the segment, Gorman reiterated her goal of one day running for President of the United States herself, explaining that those closest to her have held her accountable to her 6th-grade dream.
“It’s something that my family takes very seriously,” she explained. “They know when I say something, I mean business.”
