New Report Claims Mitch McConnell Spent Millions To Rig Democratic Senate Primary

Russia must be proud of their turtle.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) just got busted meddling in the North Carolina Democratic primary race to help vulnerable incumbent Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) face a weaker opponent in the general election.

It’s a race that has national implications for the entire nation. Should Tillis win, Republicans have a better chance at holding on to their Senate Majority, meaning President Donald Trump will be able to continue his corruption unchecked. However, if Democratic front-runner Cal Cunningham wins the primary and goes on to beat Tillis, Democrats will have a path to take the Senate back.

It’s a relatively short path, too, considering Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine), Cory Gardner (R-Co.) and Martha McSally (R-Ariz.) all face losing to strong Democratic opponents.

But just as Russia is trying to pick Trump’s Democratic challenger in the presidential election, McConnell and an affiliated super PAC are interfering with the North Carolina Democratic primary in an effort to pick Tillis’ opponent.

According to Open Secrets:

An obscure super PAC called Faith and Power PAC spent nearly $3 million boosting state Sen. Erica Smith in the Democratic primary for North Carolina’s Senate seat. The group also attacked Cunningham, who is more moderate and significantly better funded than Smith. The Democrats will face off in a primary election on March 3.

The Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC affiliated with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), accounted for all of the group’s funding. More than one-quarter of Senate Leadership Fund’s cash — $7.6 million — came from One Nation, a dark money group that shares staff and offices with the super PAC.”

This meddling comes after Republicans got caught committing election fraud in the state ahead of the 2018 Election. Instead of declaring the Democrat the winner, a special election was called and a new Republican candidate barely won.

Senate Democrats have condemned this latest Republican scheme to win an election.

“It’s so brazen and obvious. They recognize that Cunningham is a strong candidate, and they’re worried about holding on to that seat,” Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.) said in a statement. “When Republicans are weighing in for somebody, they’ve made the judgment that they’re worried about Cal, and they’re not worried about her.”

Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) also blasted the scheme pointing out that Republicans are “known for voter suppression and playing games with voters, and they are taking it to new heights here.”

Cunningham still has the best shot at winning the primary, but this attempt to disrupt the race by Republicans makes one thing clear: Russia has taught McConnell well.
