In what could end up becoming a dirty campaign tactic used by President Donald Trump in November, the Trump 2020 campaign has expressed hope that the Secret Service can be used to prevent Democrats from voting in the New Hampshire primary.
Democrats are flocking to the polls in New Hampshire to vote in a primary that could very well have a major impact on the Democratic nomination. And after the embarrassment that befell the DNC in Iowa last week, Democrats need this primary to run smoothly.
But that’s not what Trump and his campaign have in mind, and their new scheme has sinister implications on the general election in November.
Trump held a rally in Manchester ahead of primary day with one of his goals being to “shake up the Dems a little bit.”

However, his campaign is hoping to do more than that with the aid of the Secret Service.
According to the Associated Press:
Advisers hoped that Secret Service moves in downtown Manchester to secure the area for the president’s arrival would also make it harder for Democratic candidates and their supporters to transverse the state’s largest city in the hours before the primary’s first votes are cast, according to Trump campaign officials not authorized to discuss internal deliberations publicly.”
Trump is literally using the Secret Service to gum up democracy, and that’s a problem, especially if he decides to use the same tactic on Election Day.
The Secret Service goes wherever the president goes, and always disrupt the areas they are in. That means Trump could fly to key cities across the country on Election Day to make it harder for Americans to get to their polling place to vote. This tactic applied in swing states could be the difference between victory and defeat. And we all know how much Trump detests inner-city voters.
Just planning such trips would force Secret Service to travel ahead to prepare for his arrival. So even if Trump ultimately decides not to go to a city the damage will have already been done. If he does go, the disruption would be even worse. As a result, thousands of people could be prevented from voting, thus undermining democracy.
Trump is desperate to get re-elected and Senate Republicans have already given him the green light to do anything to win. After all, they acquitted him in his impeachment trial despite his clear scheme to extort Ukraine into interfering with the election on his behalf. Abusing the Secret Service for political gain is just one of many ways Trump could tip the election in his favor. And Republicans will just stand by and watch because they know they will benefit as well.
