While President Donald Trump continues to fumble his response to the coronavirus and Republicans continue defending our for-profit healthcare system, a university in Norway warned students abroad to come home, especially if they are in the United States.
Being a foreign student in the United States from a country with a national healthcare system is a bad idea right now. Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in a lack of testing and treatment. And getting stuck with a high price tag for care that could bankrupt you isn’t at all palatable either.
Needless to say, other nations seriously mistrust the United States and our extremely flawed healthcare system. And that’s why the Norwegian University of Science and Technology released a statement that urged students to come back home, all while throwing shade at the United States in the process.
“In accordance with the recommendations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NTNU strongly recommends that all NTNU students who are outside Norway return home,” the school said. “This applies especially if you are staying in a country with poorly developed health services and infrastructure and/or collective infrastructure, for example the USA. The same applies if you do not have health insurance.”
The school has since edited the message, perhaps out of fear of retaliation, but that didn’t stop Americans from agreeing with their assessment on Twitter.
I assume this is Norway’s way of calling us a shithole country pic.twitter.com/pgYequ31Xe

Norway urging its citizens to return home if they’re in countries with poorly developed collective infrastructure and using the USA as “the example” will forever be hilarious 🤣🤣🤣 #COVID19 pic.twitter.com/4tWBv2Nzju

The coronavirus has infected over 300,000 Americans and more than 8,000 have died. By comparison, Norway only has 5,500 case and only 62 have died. Clearly, their universal healthcare system is working.
Our healthcare system, meanwhile, is an embarrassment. Norway knows it, and so does the rest of the developed world. Trump’s response to the pandemic is only magnifying how terrible it is, and even Americans are waking up to that realization if they haven’t already.
