As protests against the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd (and all the countless ones to come before them) continue to rage across the country and around the world, one group of youth protesters in Lousiville, Kentucky made sure that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wasn’t spared the demonstrations.

According to a report from local news station WLKY, several groups all led by Sunrise Movement Kentucky came together on the sidewalk right outside the front door of Senator Mitch McConnell’s Lousiville, Kentucky home sometime before 7 a.m. on Friday morning.

The group released a statement explaining why they marched their way to the Senate Majority Leader’s front door so early in the morning:

Mitch McConnell is one of the most powerful people in this country. He designed this system. He pulls all the strings. He calls himself the grim reaper for social progress. Black communities breathe toxic air because of Mitch. Almost 30% of Black people in Kentucky live in poverty because Mitch set the priorities. Breonna Taylor was an emergency worker keeping Kentucky alive, while Mitch’s government abandoned America.

We’re tired of being ignored, and we’re ready for new leadership. On this Juneteenth, 155 years later, Black people are still not free, and Mitch holds the keys. We need to target elected officials at every level of government to comply with our demands. If they don’t, we’ll vote them out, including Mitch.

McConnell is one of several staunch Trump allies in Congress that’s up for reelection this November as voters are currently deciding whether the current Senator Majority Leader will face off against Amy McGrath or Charles Booker.

In an attempt to respond to the protests that landed right outside his door, McConnell’s campaign stated that Mitch recently offered up a resolution that mentioned Breonna Taylor by name and was aimed against racism.

The demonstration by the Sunrise Movement is only one portion of the massive protests across the state.

Thus far, the only tangible action has been an announcement from the LMPD detailing their plans to begin the termination process of one officer involved in Taylor’s murder. The other officers are still currently on administrative leave.
