A rabbi has revealed how he and two remaining congregants escaped from an armed suspect that was holding them hostage for nearly eleven hours in a synagogue in the Dallas-Fort Worth area Saturday. Malik Faisal Akram claimed to be the brother of a convicted terrorist. The British man demanded that she be freed from prison, where she is doing an 86-year stint.

Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker opened up to CBS Mornings on Monday about the “terrifying” ordeal and explained how they got away from Akram. He said that he and the two other remaining victims were becoming increasingly “terrified” during the final hour of the stressful ordeal because Akram “wasn’t getting what he wanted” and “it didn’t sound good.”

So, that’s when the rabbi knew that he had to do something.

“The last hour or so he wasn’t getting what he wanted, it didn’t look good, it didn’t sound good,” he recalled.

“We were terrified,” he continued. “When I saw an opportunity where he wasn’t in a good position, I made sure that the two gentlemen who were still with me, that they were ready to go, that the exit wasn’t too far away.”

Rabbi Cytron-Walker explained that he told the other hostages to get ready to run, then he threw a chair at Akram.

“I told them to go, I threw a chair at the gunman and I headed for the door,” he said. “And all three of us were able to get out without even a shot being fired.”

The three hostages managed to get out safely before law enforcement shot and killed the attacker. Rabbi Cytron-Walker told the New York Times that he credits his security training for the escape. President Joe Biden called the harrowing ordeal an “act of terror.”
