Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is the type of Republican that only cares about issues if they affect him. Well, that’s a good description for most of his GOP colleagues. Paul tried to block the previous coronavirus legislation from the Democrats. Then, because irony has been beaten to death enough in 2020, he contracted COVID-19. However, while waiting on the test results, Paul, who is a friggin’ doctor, went to the gym and swam in the Senate pool.
And because Paul doesn’t think he’s been enough of a total dickwad already, the Kentucky Senator said on Tuesday that he opposes an interim $484 billion coronavirus relief bill. He did say, however, that he would not block it, though, according to The Hill. Oh, thank you for that crumb, your majesty.
Then Paul called for parts of the economy to be reopened amid the pandemic that has left Americans shuttered at home in hopes of flattening the coronavirus curve.
“No amount of money, not all the money in China will save us from ourselves. Our only hope of rescuing this great country is to reopen the economy. If you print up billions of dollars and give it to people, they’re unlikely to spend it until you end the quarantine,” Paul said on the Senate floor.

Paul took to Twitter, too, and used an unfortunate word: Plagues.
The one thing that will get our economy going again: reopening! We can’t continue printing bailout money. It’s not a lack of money that plagues us. It’s lack of commerce. Until we reopen our economy, job losses will continue.

Paul previously tested positive for the novel coronavirus and had to subsequently quarantine when the Senate passed the previous, $2.2 trillion COVID-19 relief package, so he missed the vote.
While we, the taxpayers, are affording Paul with an excellent salary and health care benefits most of us do not have, the Kentucky Republican does not want to bail out the very Americans who pay for his luxurious lifestyle.
And even though the swimming Republican said after a backlash that “we need more testing immediately,” well, that’s what this bill would provide. Paul was able to be tested because he holds an elected office while the rest of us poor slobs do not have the same privilege. I called it a privilege, but really, amid a massive pandemic, it should be a human right.
