Report Claims GOP Senators Up For Reelection Are Being Warned Not To Defend Trump If They Want A Chance At Another Term

Talk about a rock and a hard place.

According to a new report from Politico, the Republican Party has seemingly begun to cut their losses when it comes to defending Donald Trump at this point.

It’s certainly no secret that Trump’s response to this coronavirus outbreak in the United States has not only been uninspiring at best but downright dangerous at its worst.

At the beginning of this mess, Donald’s GOP cronies made a point to jump to his defense, no matter how ridiculous his antics were. However, now that many of these folks are up for reelection in just a few short months, they’re apparently being warned to cut the Trump defenses out of their repertoire as the president continues to just make this whole debacle all the worse.

According to the report, the National Republican Senatorial Committee is now using China’s role in the coronavirus outbreak as their new basis for attacks against the Democratic party, painting their party as “weak” adversaries against the country, and urging their senatorial candidates to do the same.

The Committee recently sent a memo out to their Republican candidates for the Senate that encouraged them to praise Trump for his early ban on travel from China (that wasn’t actually all that early at all) but warned that they should avoid any debates where they’d be left defending the president’s other actions surrounding the pandemic and his lackluster response.

“Don’t defend Trump, other than the China Travel Ban — attack China,” the memo stated before going on to describe the coronavirus as “a Chinese hit-and-run followed by a cover-up that cost thousands of lives.”

However, this memo has left GOPers in a particularly tough spot, as Trump himself can’t seem to decide how he feels about China from one day to the next — often referring to the virus with racist terms and blaming this whole catastrophe on China only to turn around and praise the country’s leader for his response to the pandemic.

Republican Senate candidates are currently left to walk a very tight rope over very thin ice — and I can only imagine that more than a few will soon be falling into the water.
