Republican Senator Appears To Break With His Party, Says It’d Be “Extremely Inappropriate” To Immediately Strike Down Impeachment In Senate

It's about time one of them stood up for what's right.

It’s been made strikingly clear that while the House recognizes the atrocity of Trump’s transgressions as a result of their formal impeachment inquiry and public witness testimonies, and almost assuredly plan to act accordingly when it comes to their impeachment decision against him, the Senate trial that comes up next will be far more heavily swayed by the man on the chopping block himself.

Trump knows that his safe place lies in the Republican Senate, led by GOP Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell who has already very publicly admitted that he essentially intends to do whatever Donald Trump tells him to do in regard to his impeachment trial — whether that be the quick and quiet trial that McConnell is hoping for or the big, loud, public charade that Donald is fantasizing about.

And frankly, the Senate is pretty much stacked with folks that share the same sentiment as Mitch — such as South Carolina GOP Senator Lindsey Graham who has already publicly declared that he doesn’t even intend to be “fair” when it comes to Trump’s impeachment trial, stating recently, “I am trying to give a pretty clear signal I have made up my mind. I’m not trying to pretend to be a fair juror here.”

But as bad as the situation may be in the Trump-run Senate, there is one GOP senator that has rather bravely broken away from his colleagues who have already made the decision to leave Trump in office before they’re even presented with the facts.

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) sat down with NBC News’ Chuck Todd on Meet The Press who questioned te Senator regarding the appropriateness of Mitch McConnell essentially colluding with White House lawyers to organize an anti-impeachment strategy.

Toomey responded by saying he thinks it’s “appropriate” to ensure that Trump gets “a fair trial.”

“And I think that’s the idea,” the GOP Senator stated.

“I think it would be extremely inappropriate to put a bullet in this thing immediately when it comes over,” Toomey continued. “I think we ought to hear what the House impeachment managers have to say, give the President’s attorneys an opportunity to make their defense, and then make a decision about whether, and to what extent, it would go forward from there.”

Toomey’s move is in pretty big contrast to his fellow Republican Senators, such as McConnell and Graham, who have stated that they want the impeachment process done and over with “as quick as possible.”

We can only hope that more of his colleagues ultimately follow suit.
