Senator Mike Lee On Trump’s Actions Surrounding Capitol Attack: “Everyone Makes Mistakes”

Yea. No.

The entire Republican party has seemingly made it their life’s mission to make as big a collective ass out of themselves as humanly possible in the midst of Donald Trump’s now second impeachment trial.

The first time, Trump found himself embroiled in quite the scheme of his own making when he attempted to extort an entire country into giving him dirt on his then political opponent Joe Biden. Unsurprisingly so, the whole of the GOP was quick to defend him against the charges of extortion that he so clearly committed. Now, more than a year later, Trump lost the election to that pesky political opponent of his and fired his base up into a violent attack against the United States Capitol building on his way out, in a pathetic attempt to try to hold off his official loss just a little bit longer by forcing Congress to pause of their certification of the Electoral College votes.

Once again, the GOP is defending him against any true ramifications of what he’s done — despite the fact that pretty much all of them were also sheltered in place and ultimately evacuated from the Capitol building, right alongside their Democratic colleagues, when his supporters stormed the building.

Notable names such as Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham have been publicly desperate to save the former president from the justice the Democratic Party is eager to serve up. But none of them have been quite as tone-deaf and downright idiotic as GOP Senator Mike Lee.

Speaking publicly today, Lee chalked up Trump’s actions surrounding the Capitol attack as a “mistake.” Nothing more than a “mulligan” — a term used in golf (go figure) that allows a player to take a second stroke at their ball even though it’s against the formal rules of the game.

“Everyone makes mistakes,” Senator Lee said. “Everyone is entitled to a Mulligan.”

You don’t get a “mulligan” when people literally died because of you. A police officer died — part of that, you know, “thin blue line” they supposedly care about so much. The seams of our literal democracy were torn and Donald Trump had a personal hand in egging it on.

Not to mention, Donald Trump has already had his mulligan when it comes to his sham of a presidency. Back when he was busted for his affair with Stormy Daniels and Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins said, “We kind of gave him—‘All right, you get a mulligan.”

You don’t get another one.
