I did not see this coming.

Former President Donald Trump’s plans to speak on January 6 didn’t exactly go down well as investigations into the deadly attack on the Capitol are accelerating. Networks have been urged not to cover Trump’s presser on the anniversary of the insurrection the former President incited after whipping his supporters into a frenzy. And we’re already sure of what he had planned to say since he’s consistently repeated his big lie of a stolen 2020 election even though that’s what led to the Capitol attack, which means that he would do it all over again without regard for this country’s well-being. He is disgraceful.

As reported earlier, the House Select committee investigating the January 6 attack is preparing to ask Fox News personality Sean Hannity to cooperate with its probe voluntarily. Hannity isn’t just a Fox News host, but he was an informal adviser and confidante to the twice-impeached one-term President.

Trump just abruptly canceled his January 6 presser, saying that he will discuss what he was going to say at his Arizona rally schedule for January 15 instead, Maggie Haberman of the New York Times reports.

Politico reports that Senate Republicans “are cringing” over Trump’s plans to speak on January 6, openly fretting he’s trying to pull their party back into debating his baseless election lies.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” said Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.). “I guess it depends on what he’s going to say. But early assumptions are that it’s going to be an aggressive statement. I just don’t think it’s a good idea.”

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) said she wants to “stay focused on congressional activities.” Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), who voted to convict Trump over his role in the January 6 attack, said that the event isn’t a “terribly good idea,” but added, “What am I going to do about it?”

Well, now he doesn’t have to worry. Trump canceled, and the country can use the anniversary of the attack to remember how easily our democracy almost died on that horrifying day so that it never happens again.

Update: Trump released a statement that was shared on Twitter by his spokesperson Liz Harrington to circumvent his ban on the behemoth social site. Predictably, the former President lashed out at the committee, Adam “Shifty” Schiff, Crazy Nancy Pelosi, and the Lamestream media. Trump boasted about the crowd that will show up in Arizona, saying, “It will be a big crowd!”
