The Associated Press has recently obtained and released an audio recording of an invitation-only with Republican state lawmakers, in which Texas GOP Senator Ted Cruz can be heard making blatantly false claims about Democrats — asserting that the Left is diligently working to secure voting rights for “illegal aliens” and “child molesters.”
The call was reportedly organized by the American Legislative Exchange Council, a group of Conservatives who give lawmakers recommendations on legislation, and took place in the midst of an ongoing battle concerning voting rights.
Earlier this month, Democrats passed H.R. 1, a package that covers campaign finances and voting rights — meant to strengthen transparency in campaign finances as well as regulations for lobbyists as well as using a variety of measures to expand voting access. In the call, Cruz criticized this bill.
Republicans as a whole have attacked the bill, labeling it as major federal overreach into the way states and local governments handle their own elections.

According to the Associated Press, Senator Cruz says in the call, “H.R. 1′s only objective is to ensure that Democrats can never again lose another election, that they will win and maintain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate and of the state legislatures for the next century.”
He asserts that the bill would lead to voting by millions of “criminals” and “illegal aliens.”
He goes on to claim that the bill “says America would be better off if more murderers were voting, America would be better off if more rapists and child molesters were voting.”
It’s likely that the bill will be killed off in the Senate, but the debate over voting rights is far from over across the country.
While Democrats are pushing bills like H.R. 1, Republicans are working hard to advance legislation that would actually restrict voting access, using their false claims of mass voter fraud to further their agenda.
