The Trump administration appeared to deny that it sought to discredit Dr. Anthony Fauci even though the White House provided a document to several media outlets that contains a list of comments made by the top infectious disease expert to damage his sterling reputation. Team Trump is going after a member of the administration’s coronavirus task force while the president has surrendered to the pandemic.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany was asked about that today by CNN’s Jim Acosta.

“The President has gone off on anonymous sources in the past,” Acosta said. “Why not have the guts to trash Dr.Fauci in your own names?”

“So, President Trump — I’ll refer you back — there’s no opposition research being dumped to reporters,” McEnany said without answering the question.

McEnany then said Trump noted that Fauci has made mistakes to which Acosta shot back, “Hasn’t Trump made mistakes? He suggested Americans inject disinfectants.”

McEnany said,  “The president stands by his actions.”

So, to pile on, top White House aide Dan Scavino shared a cartoon mocking Fauci. The top U.S. infectious disease expert is disturbingly depicted as a faucet on social media. Scavino’s attack is juvenile stuff that’s being exhibited amid national crises. The freakish cartoon contains phrases like “schools stay closed this fall,” “indefinite lockdown,” and “no NFL season” spewing from the faucet.

“Sorry, Dr. Faucet! At least you know if I’m going to disagree with a colleague, such as yourself, it’s done publicly — and not cowardly, behind journalists with leaks,” Scavino wrote. “See you tomorrow!”

Trump is going after Fauci because the top infectious disease expert’s ratings are higher than the president’s. And we’re supposed to rely on Trump who surrendered to the coronavirus instead of the guy trying to give us an accurate picture of what’s going on with the raging pandemic. Trump is pushing for schools to reopen to save the economy without any regard for human life.

Vice President Mike Pence is supposed to be leading the coronavirus task force, so he should pull his people aside to talk about the attacks on Fauci. With Trump, we’re left without a leader. With Fauci, we’re given the truth whether it’s good or bad, and that’s what we need right now.
