Just last year, Donald Trump faced a backlash after he came up with the incredible idea of bringing the Taliban — who are deemed to be terrorists by the U.S. — to Camp David, the crown jewel of the American presidency, the New York Times reported. Even more stunning, the event was to take place just three days before the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on American soil. On 9/11, our country suffered its worst attack since Pearl Harbor. The meeting with Trump failed since just days prior, the Taliban claimed an attack that killed a dozen people, including an American soldier.
Trump said during a news conference last week that he would meet with leaders of the Taliban “in the not too distant future” following the signing earlier Saturday of a historic agreement between the US and the militant group. That was supposed to set in motion a full withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo did not reveal any details of a potential meeting between Trump and the leaders of the Taliban.
But that, too, failed.

Trump apparently had a phone call with the leader of the militant group, and the only reason Americans found out about it was through <checks notes> Twitter.
The American President had a phone call with the head of the Taliban… and the American people learn about it from the Taliban. https://t.co/KGyD9y0e44

Former director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics Walter Schaub called it “nuts.”

Others piled in as well.
If Obama had done this, the GOP would have set DC on fire. Literally.

We should never have to learn about national security from the Taliban nor should we outsource our communications to them.

I can confirm that some relevant @WhiteHouse officials we contacted for a comment were unaware of this even after the #Taliban had tweeted about it.

Akhund, for the record, was a key terrorist commander until 2018. I’m old enough to remember Republicans claiming that we don’t “negotiate with terrorists.” Jinkies, maybe Trump and the Taliban can just use Twitter to communicate from now on since that’s the U.S. presidential podium now.
