Yesterday as millions of Americans looked on horrified at the news, a gathering of right-wing protesters, angry at Michigan’s governor over the stay home order she instituted to combat the spread of coronavirus, stormed Michigan’s Capitol. Many of the protesters carried long guns like AR-15s into the statehouse — legally, due to pro-NRA legislation passed in the state in recent years. The potential for violence at the planned protest was so great that many law enforcement officers there to keep order wore bulletproof vests as protection.
That’s where we are now. These guys weren’t protesting some tragedy, some miscarriage of justice, some constitutional indignation. They were protesting the fact that stores are closed and they can’t buy more ammo anywhere but the internet right now. They were protesting that they can’t sit in a bar, as they likely do multiple nights a week, and dip their filthy fingers into a bowl of stale Chex mix while they swill enough see-through lager to almost forget about all the dang Muslims in Dearborn.
Instead, they’ve been sitting at home, getting angrier and angrier that they’re being told what to do — by a woman, no less — until they stumble across a call to arms from their figurehead, Donald Trump:

Well, that’s just about all it took, my friends. These freedom-humping gundamentalists turned into terrorists in the span of minutes, their intent clearly to create fear and confusion just like any terrorist group.
Directly above me, men with rifles yelling at us. Some of my colleagues who own bullet proof vests are wearing them. I have never appreciated our Sergeants-at-Arms more than today. #mileg pic.twitter.com/voOZpPYWOs

So what was our nation’s leader’s advice to the Governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer? Did he tell her to call on the National Guard to keep the public servants — and the general public — safe from these menacing, grim-faced vessels of fury? Did he offer words of encouragement to help guide her through what’s obviously the hardest part so far in her career as Governor as she makes the difficult decisions that save thousands of lives?
Nope. He told her to negotiate with the terrorists.
The Governor of Michigan should give a little, and put out the fire. These are very good people, but they are angry. They want their lives back again, safely! See them, talk to them, make a deal.

They’re not “very good people,” any more than the right-wing fanatics who marched alongside swastika-toting Nazis in Charlottesville were in 2017. They’re terrorists, using terrorism to try to get what they want. They’re paramilitary groups whose motives go beyond just reopening the economy. They’re white supremacists who showed up saying all the same things as the Charlottesville protesters, and Trump is saying the same thing about them that he said about the men who killed Heather Heyer.
He’s telling Governor Whitmer to give them what they want.
You don’t “make a deal” with people whose demands can kill others.
