Donald Trump was asked while talking to reporters on Tuesday why he won’t allow Dr. Anthony Fauci to testify before the House. Trump, of course, made it a partisan issue, saying it’s because the House “is a set-up” that’s filled with a “bunch of Trump haters.” Trump did confirm later that the nation’s top infectious disease expert can testify before the Republican-led Senate, though.

Trump didn’t stop there. The president went on to accuse the Democrats of wanting him to fail at fighting against the coronavirus pandemic, saying, “They, frankly, want our situation to be unsuccessful, which means death.”

The exchange with reporters and the president is a glimpse into Trump’s paranoid and conspiratorial mind amid a national crisis.

Watch:

Since Trump brought up “death,” nearly seventy thousand Americans have died from the novel coronavirus, and some of that is on the president since he failed to act when he first learned of a looming threat in November. Instead, Trump went golfing and held ego-rallies. Thirty million Americans have found themselves suddenly unemployed as we quarantine at home to flatten the coronavirus curve.

Trump’s “haters” remarks seem to contradict the White House, which said just last week that Dr. Fauci testifying would be “counter-productive” as the key health official leads the government coronavirus response.

Fauci has been a calming influence for most Americans as he delivers straightforward updates on the COVID-19 pandemic and the government’s efforts to battle it throughout the national crisis. The public trusts Dr. Fauci more than they trust president, the latter of whom has shared misleading or inaccurate information about the spreading disease. In fact, Trump does that on a daily basis, offering dangerous medical advice to a panicked nation.

At some point, Trump and members of his administration will have to answer questions about the appallingly slow response to the pandemic. Everything comes out in the wash, Mr. President.
