Trump Probably Won’t Be Pleased After He Learns Greta Thunberg Has Been Nominated For A Nobel Peace Prize

She deserves the prize just for getting under Trump's thin skin.

President Donald Trump has been desperately obsessed with the Nobel Peace Prize, so he’ll likely be enraged upon learning that climate change activist Greta Thunberg has been nominated for one.

Thunberg, 17, took the world by storm by skipping school to fight climate change, inspiring climate marches around the globe. She sailed to the United States last year to participate in climate protests and spoke at the United Nations, chastising international leaders for greedily stealing the future from young people in the name of profit.

“I shouldn’t be up here,” she said. “I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you! You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!”

“You are failing us,” she continued. “But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say: We will never forgive you. We will not let you get away with this. Right here, right now is where we draw the line. The world is waking up. And change is coming, whether you like it or not.”

For that, and for her continuing effort to inspire climate action, Swedish lawmakers Jens Holm and Hakan Svenneling officially nominated Thunberg to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020.

Greta “has worked hard to make politicians open their eyes to the climate crisis,” they said, going on to cite her insistence that the world take “action for reducing our emissions and complying with the Paris Agreement is therefore also an act of making peace.”

Trump has been angling for a Nobel Peace Prize for himself since taking office, even recently attacking the Nobel committee for awarding the prize to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for his effort to resolve the border conflict with neighboring Eritrea.

“I’m going to tell you about the Nobel Peace Prize, I’ll tell you about that,” Trump told a rally crowd in Ohio. “I made a deal, I saved a country, and I just heard that the head of that country is now getting the Nobel Peace Prize for saving the country. I said: ‘What, did I have something to do with it?’ Yeah, but you know, that’s the way it is. As long as we know, that’s all that matters… I saved a big war, I’ve saved a couple of them.”

The problem is that Trump had nothing to do with resolving that particular conflict.

Trump also believes he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for engaging with North Korea even though Kim Jong Un continues to refuse to give up his nuclear weapons and is expanding his arsenal.

Now that Thunberg has been nominated, it’s only a matter of time before he throws a fit about it. After all, he whined after she was featured on the cover of Time Magazine in December.

This nomination is likely to get under Trump’s skin as well, and she deserves to win it just for doing that.
