Donald Trump still hasn’t openly condemned Russia for paying bounties for the killing of American soldiers, but he is threatening to defund our military in defense of Confederate generals while hurling racism at Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).
In a late-night tweet around midnight, Trump vowed to veto a defense funding bill if it includes an amendment designed to rename American military bases that are currently named after Confederate generals.
I will Veto the Defense Authorization Bill if the Elizabeth “Pocahontas” Warren (of all people!) Amendment, which will lead to the renaming (plus other bad things!) of Fort Bragg, Fort Robert E. Lee, and many other Military Bases from which we won Two World Wars, is in the Bill!

These Confederate generals fought for legalized slavery in the United States and were traitors to our country. Their names should be nowhere near an American military base. But their names have been attached to those bases and others for decades, including Fort Hood and Fort Benning.

All of these generals were racists who believed in slavery strong enough that they committed treason and killed Americans. Yet Trump is defending them while threatening to hurt our troops.
Twitter users brutally called him out for defending the Confederacy and spewing racism.
So you’re defunding the military to defend the Confederacy? Weird priorities.

BREAKING: Donald Trump threatens to withhold funding for the troops because he wants bases to be named after racist traitors.
How un-American.

How about we rename Fort Bragg for the American hero who killed Bin Laden instead of after a slave-owning, racist loser who wanted to bring down America?

Trump is fighting for re-election on the platform of racism. He thinks he can conquer the coronavirus pandemic by demonizing Asian Americans. He thinks he can brush aside Black Lives Matter by honoring Confederate generals. But we the American people have had enough. We will win.

You don’t care that your Russian bff put a bounty on American soldiers so of course you would fight to keep alive the legacy of traitors who fought & killed American soldiers.

Donald Trump will defend confederate statues and confederate base names but does nothing when there is a bounty on US military. 😳 #TRE45ON #TrumpBounty

There is no honor in defending Confederate generals. Changing the name of a military base won’t erase our history, but it will right a wrong and send a message that the United States government is working to fix the awful legacy of systemic racism that stains our nation to this day. Even Republicans support renaming these bases. All Trump is doing is displaying his racism and proving that he really does not care about our troops.
