While many Americans are struggling to pay their rent across the country and Republicans continue to refuse to establish emergency rent deferrals so no one has to worry about losing their home during the pandemic, Donald Trump is busy begging Palm Beach County to defer the rent due from his golf course.
Seriously.
Trump has frequently bragged about being a billionaire and has raked in hundreds of millions of dollars from taxpayers by visiting his own courses since becoming president.
So, rent should not be an issue.

But Trump is attempting to take advantage of the coronavirus pandemic by requesting a rent deferral from Palm Beach County in a letter penned by the club’s finance director Ed Raymundo.
“We understand that you are continuing to evaluate whether to offer certain accommodations to tenants of the County whose businesses have been impacted by COVID-19,” the letter said. “As you are aware, as a result of the pandemic, we, like many other businesses, were required by law to cease all operations. Unfortunately, these mandated closures occurred during the busiest parts of our season.”
“Due to the significant impact of this on our operation, and consistent with the proposals to grant accommodations to your other lessees and concessionaries, we hereby request abatement of annual rent on a day for day basis coinciding with Emergency Local order 2020-003 closing all parks and golf courses to the public,” the letter continued.
The monthly rent paid by the club totals around $88,000, a drop in the bucket compared to the millions Trump is fleecing from taxpayers. In other words, he can definitely afford to pay his rent. Most Americans are not so lucky right now.
This should be an easy decision for Palm Beach officials to make. So far, they have not taken action on the deferral request, nor should they. Trump can obviously afford to pay the rent, but he’s a slimy grifter who will use any situation as an excuse to not pay his bills. If he wants to get a deferral, he should make sure every American gets one, too.
