I would never whitewash former President George W. Bush’s legacy. Still, he was correct in his address commemorating the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. He drew a comparison between the September 11 attackers and those who engaged in the January 6 act of “domestic terrorism” without mentioning the attack by name.

The former president said that our nation has seen “growing evidence that the dangers to our country can come not only across borders but from violence that gathers within.” He added, “There is little cultural overlap between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home. But in their disdain for pluralism, in their disregard for human life, in their determination to defile national symbols, they are children of the same foul spirit. And it is our continuing duty to confront them.”

Donald Trump predictably lashed out over Bush’s comments. The twice-impeached one-term president appears to be siding with the mob of his supporters that tried to stop the peaceful transition of power on Jan. 6 at his instruction. Trump released a statement through his spokesperson Liz Harrington since he’s been banned on social media after inciting the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection.

“So interesting to watch former President Bush, who is responsible for getting us into the quicksand of the Middle East (and then not winning!), as he lectures us that terrorists on the “right” are a bigger problem than those from foreign countries that hate America and that are pouring into our Country right now,” Trump said. “If that is so, why was he willing to spend trillions of dollars and be responsible for the death of perhaps millions of people? He shouldn’t be lecturing us about anything.”

Trump then blamed Bush for the 9/11 attacks that happened on his watch.

“The World Trade Center came down during his watch. Bush led a failed and uninspiring presidency. He shouldn’t be lecturing anybody!” Trump insisted.

Here is the full statement.

Yes, the 9/11 attacks happened on Bush’s watch, but COVID-19 happened on Trump’s watch, and the former president bungled his response to the pandemic. And then there was Jan. 6, with an attack on U.S. soil shamefully incited by a sitting president. There is a lot I don’t like about George Bush’s presidency, but he didn’t encourage an attack on our Capitol because his feelings were hurt. And Bush didn’t disgracefully lash out at his successor daily, so there’s that, too.
