Monday starts the dreaded confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett for the Supreme Court and lo and behold, Republicans seem like they are actively trying to get people sick. Their response to this deadly pandemic has gotten unbelievably worse since their dear leader Donald Trump has apparently recovered from it — and has tried to insinuate that he is immune. Despite ample evidence and suggestions from experts claiming that mask-wearing is one of our greatest weapons against this pandemic, the GOP seems to be railing against it as hard as possible. That is just what they do it seems, they take an idea, something wholly good for the people, and cast their lot against it.

The most recent example of this is White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows who was outside the court while the hearing was commencing inside. Reporters asked him to wear a mask while he answered their questions and he just could not handle it. Meadows at first backed away and said that he was 10 feet from them, but the reporters insisted that he wear a face covering. “I’m not gonna talk through a mask,” he pouted and proceeded to walk off just 20 seconds into the media’s questions.

This hilariously sad example of refusing to wear a mask is one of the issues that has plagued us as a nation. Meadows is far from the only Republican attempting to go maskless. Mike Lee was seen inside the hearing after testing positive with coronavirus not wearing a mask and then there was National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien, who on Saturday, was seen giving a tour of the still very much infected White House Briefing Room.

Until there is a time when we can take this virus seriously and have our own government follow the CDC recommendations to reduce transmission, I fear that we will not be able to topple this virus and even more American lives will be at risk.
