Donald Trump’s presidency has looked doomed several times before, but we have to admit that it does seem like things are piling up on the president now.

Trump’s presidency has taken several massive hits lately. With a highly opposed government shutdown, a tanking stock market, and terrible foreign policy decisions in addition to his investigations, the future does not look good — and Watergate journalist Elizabeth Drew thinks the end is near for Trump after the Democrats take the House of Representatives, if he doesn’t resign on his own.

Citing an op-ed in the New York Times, Drew said:

An impeachment process against President Trump now seems inescapable. Unless the president resigns, the pressure by the public on the Democratic leaders to begin an impeachment process next year will only increase.”

Drew also made a stunning prediction that Democrats won’t be the only force calling for Trump’s impeachment — she stated that many Republicans firmly believe that the only way to save the party is to get rid of Trump. Drew said:

It always seemed to me that Mr. Trump’s turbulent presidency was unsustainable and that key Republicans would eventually decide that he had become too great a burden to the party or too great a danger to the country. That time may have arrived. In the end the Republicans will opt for their own political survival.”

Drew spoke about how Trump’s most recent decisions have caused the GOP to panic:

The odor of personal corruption on the president’s part — perhaps affecting his foreign policy — grew stronger. Then the events of the past several days — the president’s precipitous decision to pull American troops out of Syria, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis’s abrupt resignation, the swoon in the stock market, the pointless shutdown of parts of the government — instilled a new sense of alarm among many Republicans.”

Drew pointed out that Trump’s time in office “seems to have only two possible outcomes.” She stated that he could either be impeached or resign like Nixon. However, the case against his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, will weigh heavily on the president, as he could face criminal charges for campaign finance violations if he loses in 2020 — unless he can negotiate a deal to resign without being charged. Drew explained Trump’s dire situation:

Facing an assortment of unpalatable possibilities, including being indicted after he leaves office, Mr. Trump will be looking for a way out. ”
