Donald Trump, once the self-proclaimed best deal-maker in the world, is now dealing with a huge problem of his own making. His recent pick for vice president, Senator JD Vance from Ohio, has turned into a major disaster. Trump, known for his big personality and even bigger ego, is now struggling with the fallout from his VP choice. Let’s break down why this pick is causing so many problems for Trump and the Republicans.

According to recent reports, Trump was “stunned” and “troubled” by the flood of negative coverage surrounding Vance. Trump had hoped to ease Vance into the spotlight, but instead, Vance was hit with a storm of bad press. The New York Times revealed that Trump was caught off guard by the intensity of the criticism.

JD Vance, known for his book Hillbilly Elegy, is now facing a major PR disaster. His comments in interviews and podcasts have not been well received. For example, he labeled “childless cat ladies” as a major problem in America and suggested tracking women who seek abortions in states where it is banned. Kamala Harris, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, criticized Vance sharply, calling his views “creepy” and “unacceptable.” She said,

“JD Vance’s obsession with controlling women’s most personal health care decisions… isn’t just bad policy—it’s creepy, it’s unacceptable, and voters won’t stand for it.”

Harris’s response is spot-on, as it highlights the troubling nature of Vance’s positions on women’s rights, which many find invasive and extreme. With Vance in the spotlight, Trump’s campaign is scrambling to fix the damage. The former president even compared himself to Vince Lombardi, the famous football coach, suggesting that he could somehow coach Vance to handle the negative press better. But unlike Lombardi, who led the Green Bay Packers to victory, Trump’s attempt to help Vance seems to be heading straight for a fumble.

This situation is reminiscent of past Republican mistakes. Remember Sarah Palin in 2008? She was the least popular vice presidential nominee since Palin, and Vance seems to be following in those unfortunate footsteps. In fact, Vance’s approval ratings are lower than a limbo stick at a party. It looks as though Trump and the Republicans are picking unqualified candidates without considering the consequences.

The negative press about Vance isn’t just a problem for Trump’s campaign; it also affects how voters see him. Research from past elections shows that controversial or unpopular vice presidential picks can drag down the top of the ticket. In this case, Trump’s gamble with Vance might end up hurting his campaign, dragging it into a political mess.

Did Trump really think picking JD Vance for vice president would be smooth sailing? It turns out it’s been a rough ride instead. With Vance’s controversial remarks and low approval ratings, Trump might be second-guessing his decision.
