JD Vance recently got himself into a tricky situation after defending a joke he said people shouldn’t be “so offended” by. A day later, though, he was outraged when President Joe Biden made a comment aimed at Trump supporters, showing a clear double standard.
It all started when comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made a joke at Trump’s rally, calling Puerto Rico a “floating pile of garbage.” Many people thought it was offensive, but Vance brushed it off, saying, “I’m not going to comment on the specifics of the joke, but I think we have to stop getting so offended at every little thing in the United States. I’m so over it.” In his mind, Americans should just ignore jokes like this.
But Vance’s tune changed quickly when Biden responded by saying, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his [Trump’s] supporters.” Suddenly, Vance was furious, calling Biden’s comment “disgusting.” He claimed, “Kamala Harris and her boss Joe Biden are attacking half of the country. There’s no excuse for this.”
This is disgusting. Kamala Harris and her boss Joe Biden are attacking half of the country.
There’s no excuse for this. I hope Americans reject it.

Many people noticed the hypocrisy and were quick to call him out. Social media lit up with users sharing Vance’s original statement and questioning why he wasn’t following his own advice about not being so offended.

This reaction showed the double standard some Republicans often display. They’re okay with making jokes or saying bold things themselves, but they get upset when others respond. It’s like they want everyone to be tough—except when it comes to their own feelings.
Even some Republicans criticized the rally. Fox News commentator Megyn Kelly called the rally “too bro-tastic,” saying, “You’re trying to win an election in which you’re hemorrhaging female voters. Maybe…you clean up the bro talk just a little so you don’t alienate women in the middle of America.” Nikki Haley, another Republican, shared similar concerns, warning that the “bromance” at the rally could push female voters away.
This incident with Vance shows how some Republicans talk about “free speech” and not being easily offended, but when the tables turn, they react differently. They seem to only want free speech only for themselves and their supporters, while expecting others to stay silent.
If Vance really believes in “not getting so offended,” he should have let Biden’s comment slide. But his strong reaction only proved he’s quick to criticize others without holding himself to the same standard. Americans see this double standard and are getting tired of the “rules for you, not for me” attitude from leaders like Vance
