Elon Musk, once known as a man with somewhat inscrutable politics who admired Barack Obama and once resigned from Donald Trump’s business councils, went all-in for Trump in the 2024 election. He bought the former Twitter in 2022, turned it into X, and made it more accepting of right-wing, and in some cases racist views.
Formally endorsing Trump on the day of the July assassination attempt, Musk launched a massive Super PAC that helped Trump win. Musk spoke down the stretch of launching a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which after Trump’s win became a reality.

“Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies – Essential to the ‘Save America’ Movement,” Trump said in the announcement of DOGE.

Skeptics have stated that DOGE, which will be led by Musk and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, will merely serve as a powerless commission meant to give a couple of supporters something to do without giving them real jobs with real responsibilities. And of course, Musk is currently in charge of about five companies, and it’s unclear how much time he would have for a presidential commission.

There’s also been speculation that Trump and Musk, two men with large egos who are used to be in charge, will eventually have a falling out. And there are indications of that already.
According to CNBC, Musk may have already overstayed his welcome at Mar-a-Lago, where he has been camped out for over a week. In fact, Trump joked at one point, with House Republicans, that “Elon won’t go home. I can’t get rid of him.”
“Musk has been so aggressive in pushing his views about Trump’s second term that he’s stepping on the toes of Trump’s transition team and may be overstaying his welcome at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s home in Palm Beach, Florida, according to two people familiar with the transition who have spent time at the resort over the past week,” CNBC reported.
“He’s behaving as if he’s a co-president and making sure everyone knows it,” one person quoted in the story said, adding that Musk has been taking credit for Trump’s election victory.
