JD Vance Tried To Express His Admiration For Ohio State After Their Loss To Michigan—But The Internet’s Response Was Brutal

Vice President-elect JD Vance took to social media to express his admiration for the Ohio State Buckeyes following their stunning loss to Michigan, but the internet was far less forgiving.

Vance shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “To the OSU seniors on that team: I know it sucks to lose four to Michigan, but for your entire college career, you guys have conducted yourselves like champions. I speak for nearly all of us fans when I say: we’re proud of you!”

 

The Buckeyes, who entered the game as 21-point favorites, fell to Michigan for the fourth straight year in what many are calling one of the biggest upsets in the rivalry’s history. Michigan, struggling with a 6-5 record, handed Ohio State a loss that not only ended their hopes for a College Football Playoff berth but also cast doubt on their shot at the Big Ten championship.

A Shocking Loss and a Postgame Brawl

Ohio State, ranked No. 2 with a 10-2 record, came into the game as heavy favorites. Their season was on the line, but their dreams were dashed as Michigan pulled off the unthinkable. The upset marked the Wolverines’ fourth consecutive win against their biggest rival, adding to Ohio State’s frustration.

Tensions boiled over after the game, resulting in a postgame brawl between players from both teams. Videos circulating online showed law enforcement using pepper spray to break up the altercation, leaving players from both sides visibly affected. Michigan running back Kalel Mullings condemned the incident, calling it “bad for the sport.”

Vance Faces Online Criticism

While Vance’s message to the Buckeyes was meant as a rallying cry, his comments received heavy backlash online.

 

 

 

 

Another questioned Vance’s choice to praise players involved in the brawl, writing, “‘Conducted yourselves like champions?’ Didn’t they just get into a fight because they were sore losers?”

 

Loyalty to the Buckeyes Runs Deep

Vance has long been open about his allegiance to Ohio State, even joking during his vice-presidential nomination that it could hurt Trump’s chances in Michigan. “When he first asked me to be VP, I said, ‘Well, hopefully, we don’t lose Michigan by like 900 votes, because you’re going to regret it. Probably just a thousand pissed-off Wolverine fans,’” Vance quipped during an appearance on The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show.

Despite this, Trump and Vance ultimately carried Michigan in the election. Vance had previously suggested that he and Trump might attend this year’s Ohio State-Michigan game as a celebratory gesture following their election victory.

Moving Forward

For coach Ryan Day and the Buckeyes, the loss leaves them at a crossroads. With their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, Ohio State faces mounting pressure to regroup and salvage their season. For Vance, the backlash over his support of the Buckeyes highlights how deeply college football rivalries resonate—even in the world of politics.

One thing remains clear: whether on the field or online, the rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan is as heated as ever.
