Over the weekend, Donald Trump announced that he would nominate Kash Patel — an ultra-loyalist who has written children’s books about Trump’s heroism — as the next director of the FBI. This would presumably mean that Trump intends to fire the current FBI director, Christopher Wray, who was appointed by Trump himself following the firing of James Comey in 2017.
Wray, despite his status as a Republican and Trump appointee, has loomed large in pro-Trump conspiracy lore, largely concerning the FBI’s investigation of the January 6 riot, which led to hundreds of criminal convictions. In fact, despite conspiracy theories about the FBI being part of the Deep State, none of the eight FBI directors in history has ever been a Democrat, even the ones appointed by Democratic presidents.
Now, a Trump loyalist in Congress is appearing to threaten Wray with Congressional investigations, if not criminal prosecution, with a Merry Christmas message tied in for good measure.
“Remain close to DC. Your presence will be commanded. Repeatedly,” Rep. Clay Higgins posted on X on Saturday, implying that Wray will be called to testify before Congress. “In this Holiest of seasons, as you box up your mementos of oppression, may visions of the thousands of American J6 families you’ve destroyed dance through your head. Merry Christmas.”

Higgins is known for wild social media behavior, including a moment in September when he pushed the hoax about Haitian immigrants eating dogs and cats, after a Haitian group filed “citizen criminal charges” against Donald Trump and J.D. Vance.
“Lol. These Haitians are wild. Eating pets, vudu, nastiest country in the western hemisphere, cults, slapstick gangsters… but damned if they don’t feel all sophisticated now, filing charges against our President and VP,” Higgins said in an X post that was later deleted.
It’s worth noting that one Republican senator, Mike Rounds of South Dakota, this week praised Wray, and called for him to remain in place. And that there hasn’t been even a hint of misconduct in Wray’s investigations of January 6, which have successfully led to hundreds of convictions at trial.
