After a plane and helicopter collided near Reagan Airport late last month, leading to the deaths of 67 people, President Donald Trump went all in on blaming diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), along with vague references to policies of the Obama and Biden Administrations.

“We have to have our smartest people,” Trump said at a press conference the day after the crash last Thursday, per an NBC News report.  “It doesn’t matter what they look like, how they speak, who they are. … They have to be talented, naturally talented. Geniuses. Can’t have regular people doing their job. We can’t have regular people doing this job. They won’t be able to do it, but we’ll restore faith in American air travel.” Trump also claimed that requirements have been lowered, leading to tragedies like the crash.

There is little to no evidence that this is the case, but at any rate, some new polling data has arrived on that question. Before long, there was a great deal of blaming and conspiracy theorizing once the news emerged that one of the helicopter pilots in the crash was a woman. This was not to be confused with the other theory about a specific trans woman being the pilot, which also wasn’t true.

Axios, citing Morning Consult data, found that “Trump’s strategy of pointing to DEI and the Biden administration did not resonate with Americans.”

When asked who was to blame for the crash, 26 percent chose the Trump Administration, 24 percent blamed DEI, and 22 percent answered the Biden Administration.

Once again, we still don’t have any conclusions yet about exactly who really was to blame for the crash, with investigations still ongoing.

“The National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the cause, will take about 30 days to release a preliminary report, and a final report, which will determine a probable cause, will take much longer, it said,” CNN said.  Still, details about the collision’s circumstances and potential avenues for the investigation are emerging.”
