Florida State University quickly canceled all classes and events for the day. The school stated that safety was its top priority. Students and faculty attempted to contact their loved ones to let them know they were okay. The scene outside was heartbreaking. Friends hugged each other, and some were crying.
Local and federal officials responded fast. The FBI joined the investigation. The Tallahassee Fire Department took control of the campus, and helicopters flew overhead. Police found a grey car nearby with a weapon inside. They are investigating whether it is connected to the attack.
Governor Ron DeSantis said his “prayers are with our FSU family.” President Trump also said he was fully briefed on the situation.
This was not the first shooting at FSU. Back in 2014, another gunman opened fire at the campus library, injuring three people. Police killed that shooter. The school has about 45,000 students. It is one of the most well-known universities in Florida, and, shockingly, such violence keeps happening there.
Some people are now asking essential questions. How did the gunman get on campus? Why did he do it? Could this have been prevented? Many also want to know what schools are doing to protect students. These are hard questions, but they need answers.
Mass shootings in schools and universities are becoming more common. Better mental health care, stronger gun laws, and safer school buildings could all contribute to improvement. But change takes time—and action.
