May they rest in power and the light of righteousness that they lived.

So heartbroken. So terribly sad. I am simply without any more words, today.

The couple had fostered dogs for the organization, preparing them to become support animals. One of those dogs, Minnie, successfully graduated and now helps a veteran. But Gilbert, the golden retriever who stole hearts, never made it through the program.
Helping Paws Inc. said Gilbert “eventually career changed,” after being deemed too friendly to complete service dog training. Democratic Rep. Erin Koegel added that he had “flunked out of school” and shared that “Melissa wanted him to fail so she could keep him.”
That joke became reality. Gilbert flunked out of training school and found his permanent home with the Hortmans. He became a beloved member of their family.
During the funeral at the Capitol, many mourners paid tribute not only to Melissa and Mark, but also to the joyful golden retriever who shared their home and lives. Gilbert’s presence at the funeral symbolized the bond between people and their pets — and how deeply love can run, even in the face of tragedy.
Gilbert was more than just a pet. He was a symbol of warmth, loyalty, and unconditional love. And now, alongside the people who loved him most, he rests in honor at the heart of Minnesota’s Capitol.
