Donald Trump has sat for some softball interviews over the years with Fox News hosts, including numerous such sitdowns with Sean Hannity, the Fox and Friends crew, and others on the network. Over the weekend, Trump took part in possibly the most softball of those interviews to date, with his own daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, who now works for Fox.
In the interview, Trump made what The Daily Beast described as ” a bizarre reference to women.”
“You gave people opportunities that maybe they would never have taken themselves. You’ve often seen things in people that they don’t even see in themselves,” Lara Trump, the former RNC Vice Chair and wife of the president’s son Eric, said in the interview.
“Especially women,” Trump replied.

“You did it for me!,” Lara replied, as if her ascent during the Trump era is more about her being a woman than being a relative of the president.

Mother Jones watched the entire interview, and pointed out that it was filled with softballs, even by the usual Trump-on-Fox standards.
“A journalist who lands a prime-time interview with the president might be expected to come with substantive questions, especially in a time when Texas is reeling from floods that killed more than 120 people, the MAGA base is revolting over the Epstein files, the State Department has enacted mass layoffs, and fears are mounting again about a global trade war,” the piece said. “Instead, Lara Trump treated her father-in-law to a glowing display of puffery.”
Among the examples of questions asked by Lara of her father-in-law:

Here’s a taste of the vibe: “Some people have called you the bodyguard of Western civilization,” she claimed. “How do you feel about that title?” 🤡https://t.co/1sSg0ixSfk

“Why is it that you are back here in this White House now, despite so many people saying it was impossible?”
“When will [people] actually start to see the positive impact from the one Big Beautiful Bill in their lives?”
“How important has family been to you in all of this?”
“Some people have called you the bodyguard of Western civilization. How do you feel about that title?”
