On Friday, July 11, police in Windsor, Colorado, cited Tyler Boebert, the oldest son of Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, with a misdemeanor charge of child abuse. The charge is based on criminal negligence where no injury or death occurred. The Weld County District Attorney confirmed the charge.
As of July 25, the exact details of the incident were not public. But Congresswoman Boebert released a statement. She said the charge came after her young grandson got out of the house without supervision.
“Tyler has been doing a great job getting his life on track as a father and citizen over the past year,” she said. “Unfortunately, this event stems from a miscommunication on monitoring my young grandson that recently led to him getting out of our house.”
She added, “As the citation states, there was absolutely no injury or physical abuse involved. Our family has already met with CPS to ensure we are continuing to provide a safe environment for my boys and my grandson. I am confident this is a one-time incident that we have addressed as a family.”

Tyler Boebert became a father in June 2023. He is only 20 years old.
This is not his first run-in with the law.
Back in September 2022, Tyler crashed his father’s SUV into a creek bed in Garfield County. His passenger suffered several concussions and a badly cut hand. Tyler was ticketed for careless driving, but later took a plea deal. Prosecutors dropped the case to a simple “defective headlights” ticket.
In January 2024, Tyler called police and said his father, Jayson Boebert, had assaulted him. Police arrested Jayson after Tyler said his father pushed him to the ground and shoved his thumb into his mouth. That case was widely reported and sparked public concern.
Then in February 2024, Tyler was arrested again. He was charged with a string of crimes, including theft from vehicles and using stolen credit cards at gas stations in Rifle and Parachute. He faced more than a dozen charges but pleaded guilty to just one: attempted identity theft.
That guilty plea resulted in a two-year deferred sentence. Tyler was placed on probation and given community service. The judge said the felony charge could be cleared from his record if he completed probation successfully. His conditions also included staying away from drugs.
It’s still unknown if this new charge will affect that probation deal. His probation term still has more than a year left.
The Weld County DA’s office confirmed that the police report is not available to the public yet. No court documents have been filed except a summons dated July 11. Tyler is due in Weld County Court on September 8 at 1 p.m.
Lauren Boebert moved to Windsor from the Western Slope in 2024, after switching districts. She now represents Colorado’s 4th Congressional District. She became a grandmother at age 36 when Tyler’s son was born.
