Before she was the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt ran for Congress, unsuccessfully, in New Hampshire in 2022. According to a NOTUS report in January, Leavitt’s campaign at the time owed $300,000 in unpaid debts, with the future White House spokesperson “failing to disclose for years that her campaign took in hundreds of thousands of dollars in inappropriate donations and never paid the money back.” Not only that, but the majority of that money was “owed as refunds to contributors who appear to have donated above the legal limits.”
Now, Raw Story has published an update on Leavitt’s campaign debt.
According to the piece, authored by Dave Levinthal of Open Secrets, which in turn cited a new FEC disclosure, “as spring turned to summer, Karoline Leavitt’s 2022 congressional campaign committee failed to pay off a penny of the $326,370.50 it owes across more than 100 creditors.”
In addition, the campaign raised no new money in the last three months.

“A source close to Leavitt, who spoke to OpenSecrets on condition of anonymity, underscored that Leavitt doesn’t personally owe anyone money and that her congressional campaign, which is being audited by the FEC, is ‘working with the FEC through the audit and that process is ongoing, hence the outstanding ‘debt,'” Raw Story reported.
Back in January, Democratic Congressman Daniel Goldman (D-NY) compared Leavitt’s campaign troubles to those of former Congressman George Santos, who recently began a prison sentence.
This is very similar to what George Santos did, and he’s about to go to jail.
Any nonpartisan Justice Dept would aggressively investigate this, like Biden’s DOJ did with Menendez and Adams.
If Trump’s DOJ does not investigate these allegations, it is simply bc of partisanship. https://t.co/ucWuRop8PN

“In November 2022, the Democrat-aligned political action committee End Citizens United filed an FEC complaint against Leavitt’s committee, alleging that it violated campaign finance law by accepting contributions that exceeded federal limits. But more than two and a half years on, the independent, bipartisan body has not ruled on the case against Karoline for Congress,” OpenSecrets said in their report.
