Pure political humiliation

Donald Trump has crossed another dangerous line. His FBI just raided the home of his former national security adviser John Bolton.

The raid happened early Friday morning at Bolton’s house in the Washington DC area. It was part of an investigation into classified documents, at least that is what the Associated Press reported. But the timing and the target tell a bigger story. Bolton is one of Trump’s most outspoken critics. He wrote a book that exposed Trump as reckless, ignorant, and desperate for foreign help in his re election. Trump tried to block it, and when he failed, he promised Bolton would “pay a very big price.” Now, years later, the payback has arrived.

The FBI director, Kash Patel posted a cryptic message on X after the raid. He wrote, “NO ONE is above the law… @FBI agents on mission.” JD Vance, Trump’s vice president, reposted it. Dan Bongino, the deputy director of the FBI, added, “Public corruption will not be tolerated.”

These men serve Trump. Their words sound less like impartial law enforcement and more like a warning shot to anyone who dares to oppose him.

Bolton was not even home when the raid began. He told CNN he had no idea law enforcement was at his door. Reporters later spotted him at his Washington office talking to agents in vests marked “FBI.”

It is important to remember the history here. Bolton clashed with Trump on Iran, Afghanistan, and North Korea. He called out Trump for begging China to help him win the 2020 election. He mocked Trump for not knowing Finland was an independent country. He accused Trump of conduct that was impeachable. His book, The Room Where It Happened, became a bestseller despite Trump’s attempts to ban it. From the start, Bolton was marked as an enemy.

On his first day back in power this year, Trump stripped security clearances from dozens of former intelligence officials, including Bolton. He even canceled Bolton’s security detail. These are not the actions of a president confident in his own leadership.

Critics see the raid for what it is. Meghan Hays, a former Biden adviser, told CNN the whole thing “seems extremely political, extremely petty” and a “poor use of FBI resources.” She is right. This was not about national security. It was about humiliation.

Trump allies are laughing about it. Roger Stone, who was once prosecuted and then pardoned by Trump, posted on social media: “Good morning. John Bolton. How does it feel to have your home raided at 6 o’clock in the morning?” That gloating says it all.
